How to check if a deoxidant in its packaging is still active (not exhausted)?

In order to safely store unused deoxidizers (oxygen absorbing chemicals used in the food industry, packaging, electronics, and other fields), a series of rules must be followed - they depend on the type of deoxidizer (organic/inorganic, dry/liquid), but there are universal requirements that all types must comply with. The following are the main storage rules organized by key categories:

1. General storage requirements

Unused deoxidizers should be stored in a dedicated enclosed space (warehouse, cabinet) that meets the following standards:

  • Lack of direct sunlight (UV rays can damage many types of deoxidizers and reduce their activity).

  • Temperature stability: Most deoxidizers are stored at 5-25 ° C (with exceptions in the product technical manual); Do not store when temperature changes, freezing, or heating exceed 30 ° C.

  • Low air humidity (not exceeding 60-70%): Even when not in use, moisture can activate oxygen absorption, leading to rapid depletion of deoxidizers; Dry powder/granular deoxidizer requires additional coagulation protection.

  • Good ventilation (natural or mechanical): prevent possible accumulation of volatile decomposition products and maintain a stable microclimate.

  • Children, unauthorized personnel, and animals are not allowed to enter.

2. Protection against contact with activators (oxygen, water, air)

The main function of deoxidizers is to react with oxygen, so the key storage rule is to prevent unused products from coming into contact with the surrounding air and water (for most types of water, water accelerates the reaction with O). For this purpose:

  • Store the deoxidizer in its original sealed packaging (plastic containers with bolted lids, vacuum bags, metal cans) - do not pour it into unsealed containers (glass jars without lids, paper bags).

  • After partial opening, the packaging is immediately resealed (using additional vacuum packaging, tape sealing, silicone sealed containers) - even brief air contact can reduce the activity of the deoxidizer.

  • Prohibited to store near outdoor water sources (swimming pools, faucets, humidifiers) and high condensation areas (basements, warehouses).

3. Separation from other substances

Deoxidizers should not be stored together with substances that may cause chemical reactions, packaging damage, or reduced deoxidizer activity:

  • It is prohibited to store mixed with strong oxidants (peroxides, nitrates, chlorides), acids, bases, flammable liquids (gasoline, alcohol), and flammable substances (which may cause ignition, explosion, or chemical degradation of deoxidizers).

  • Separate from food (if deoxidizers are not used in the food industry) and drugs - to avoid accidental entry into food/drugs.

  • According to the type of deoxidizer (organic, such as ascorbic acid, sodium thiosulfate; inorganic, such as iron powder, alumina) - placed in different areas of the warehouse and labeled.

4. Packaging and labeling requirements

  • All containers containing deoxidizers must be clearly labeled with the product name, deoxidizer type, production date, shelf life, concentration (if necessary), hazard (if the product is a hazardous chemical), and handling rules.

  • Tracking shelf life - Unused deoxidizers will not be stored after expiration (their activity decreases and they stop working).

  • Regularly check the integrity of the packaging - if damage (cracks, leaks, ruptures) is found, pour the deoxidizer into a new sealed container (labeled appropriately), and dispose of it if the damage is severe.

5. Special rules for specific types of deoxidizers

Some categories of deoxidizers have specific requirements in technical documents, mainly including:

  • Dry powder/particle deoxidizer (iron powder, silica gel with added deoxidizer): stored in absolutely dry conditions, using containers with sealed lids (polypropylene, metal); Do not come into contact with water (which may cause corrosion or exothermic reactions).

  • Liquid deoxidizer (ascorbic acid, sodium thiosulfate in solution): stored in glass or plastic containers (non-metallic containers - prevent corrosion) to prevent freezing (damage to solution structure); When partially used, seal the container and store it in a dark place.

  • Food deoxidizers (used for food packaging: breadcrumbs, candies, meat products): Store separately from non food analogues, comply with higher hygiene requirements (regularly clean the room, use clean containers), strictly adhere to shelf life (expired food deoxidizers are prohibited from being used in food).

  • Highly active inorganic deoxidizers (magnesium oxide, aluminum powder): stored in vacuum packaging and prohibited from opening in poorly ventilated rooms (can react with moisture in the air and release heat).

6. Accounting and Control Rules

  • Keep records of all deoxidizer shipments - record receipt date, quantity, storage location, and expiration date (using a logbook or electronic database).

  • Regularly check the storage status (once every 7-14 days) - monitor temperature, humidity, packaging integrity, and deoxidizer activity (if necessary, conduct oxygen absorption tests).

  • According to the hazardous/non hazardous chemical disposal regulations (depending on the product type), recover deoxidizers that have lost their activity, have damaged packaging, or have expired.

7. Safety of Staff

Personnel handling deoxidizers should comply with personal protective rules:

  • When opening packaging and moving deoxidizers, use rubber gloves, goggles, and a respirator (working with powder deoxidizers to prevent particle inhalation).

  • Place first aid supplies (drinking water, soda solution, dressings) and fire extinguishers in the storage room (the type of fire extinguisher is selected based on the type of deoxidizer - for example, powder fire extinguishers are used for dry products).
